Record-Breaking Submarine Cable Installation at 2150 Meters
Recently, Prysmian, a global leader in energy and telecom cable systems, announced the successful completion of sea trial tests for the ultra-deep installation of a 500 kV HVDC MI1 cable at a staggering depth of 2150 meters. This groundbreaking achievement sets a new industry standard, as it's the first time an HVDC cable has been laid at such depths.
Cutting-Edge Design:
The cable features non-metallic armoring designed with a composite material based on high-modulus synthetic fibers. It represents the next generation of cable technology.
An innovative armor solution, 50% lighter than steel underwater, combined with the state-of-the-art Leonardo da Vinci cable-laying vessel, enables the installation and maintenance of Terna's Tyrrhenian Link at over 2000 meters-the deepest depth ever reached by a power cable.
Proven Reliability:
The successful sea trials underscore the reliability of Prysmian cables. Notably, the same lightweight armor technology was previously used in the Evia-Andros-Tinos interconnection at 550 meters depth (2019) and the Crete-Peloponnese submarine interconnection project at 1000 meters depth (2020).
The Tyrrhenian Link:
The cable will play a crucial role in the Tyrrhenian Link project, awarded to Terna S.p.A. in 2021. Valued at €1.7 billion, this project aims to enhance the Mediterranean energy hub by supporting power exchange between Sardinia, Sicily, and Campania.
Prysmian, as part of the contract, will design, supply, and install over 1500 kilometers of submarine cables for this ambitious endeavor.
Prysmian: A Global Cable Giant:
Prysmian Kabel und Systeme GmbH, a major player in the global power cable market, holds a market share exceeding 10% in both communication and power cables worldwide.
