On May 25, the first 500 kV crosslinked polyethylene power cable system (including factory soft joint) with domestically produced insulating materials, developed by the China Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd., passed the type test at the Zhoushan Marine Transmission Technology Laboratory. The research and development of high-voltage cable insulation materials and cable factory soft joint technology are recognized as world-class technical challenges. The insulating materials and factory soft joints of the cable system that passed the test this time have all been independently developed in China, filling the gap in the technology of domestic insulating materials 500 kV cable soft joints. It is an important phased progress in the independent production of 500 kV cables in China, marking a further enhancement of China's independent controllability of the high-voltage cable industry chain.

It is introduced that the 500 kV crosslinked polyethylene power cable system is jointly developed by the China Electric Power Research Institute, Zhoushan Marine Transmission Technology Laboratory, Ningbo Oriental Cable Co., Ltd., Wanma (Zhejiang) High Voltage Material Co., Ltd., Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Changyuan Power Technology Co., Ltd. It consists of a cable body and factory soft joint, composite bushing terminal, porcelain bushing terminal, straight-through joint, insulation joint, and other parts, and the cable conductor cross-section is 2500 square millimeters. The relevant technologies of the cable system can be used for the manufacturing and maintenance of large-length submarine cables in the future.

It is understood that the research team will continue to carry out engineering application research on 500 kV cable systems, further promote the localization of core materials of higher voltage cables, and enhance the international competitiveness of China's cable industry.
