To actively implement the requirements of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's "Notice on Promoting the Evolution and Application Innovation Development of 5G Lightweight (RedCap) Technology," China Telecom Research Institute, under the guidance of the Cloud and Network Development Department of China Telecom Group, conducted experiments related to RedCap functionalities and performance testing based on the China Telecom Cloud-Network Fusion Large-Scale Scientific Innovation device. This experiment utilized the multi-vendor and fully interconnected mobile network test capabilities of the large-scale scientific innovation device, testing the relevant functionalities of wireless network main equipment manufacturers such as ZTE, Huawei, and Ericsson, as well as core network main equipment manufacturers ZTE and Huawei.
The test results indicate that compared to 5G eMBB, 5G RedCap (R17) can reduce terminal complexity and cost by 60% in the initial stage. It retains the basic capabilities of 5G and supports advantages such as slicing, URLLC, and compatibility with Legacy UE. In terms of single-user peak, cell capacity, latency, and other performance aspects, it outperforms LTE Cat4. This experiment addressed compatibility issues between terminals, wireless networks, and core networks, as well as dedicated BWP and intra-frequency switching problems. It verified the technical solution for introducing 5G RedCap capabilities into China Telecom's existing network, promoting the maturity of major manufacturers' equipment in the existing network, laying the foundation for the group and various provincial companies to carry out RedCap field trials and pilot commercial expansions.
Currently, China Telecom Group has conducted RedCap field trials in 10 provinces including Zhejiang, Guizhou, and Guangdong. The 5G RedCap technology solution has facilitated industry demonstration applications in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Fujian. Through the RedCap large-scale scientific innovation experiment, China Telecom has not only enhanced its leading position in the 5G industry application field but also injected new vitality into the industry's development. In the future, China Telecom will continue to deepen the research and application of 5G lightweight technology, working together with partners to promote the popularization and promotion of 5G RedCap technology in various industries.
